『UnknownForest誰も知らない想像の森へ』を演出のタイトルとして、「住友館」は森・自然を含むあらゆるいのちの多様性を認め、チャレンジ精神とテクノロジーで社会課題を解決し、夢のあるエンターテイメントを通じて、みんなが集い語る場を作ります。 住友は約400年に及ぶ歴史の中で、自利利他公私一如（じりりたこうしいちにょ）等の事業精神をもとに様々な事業を展開してきました。自利利他公私一如とは自分のためになると同時に、人・社会・地球のためにもなる行いをすることを意味します。この事業精神は、例えば、長年にわたる伐採と煙害で荒廃した別子銅山に植林を行い、100年かけて豊かな自然を取り戻した住友が、身をもって学んできた考え方であり、現代のSDGsの考え方に通じるものです。多様な生命を包み込む森について考えることは、万博のテーマ「いのち輝く未来社会のデザイン」につながっています。
大阪・関西は住友発祥の地であり、万博への出展は大阪・関西エリアの更なる発展にも貢献できるものと考えています。今回のパビリオン出展を通じて、約400年に及ぶ住友の歴史の中で培ってきた英知や技術、人材を集結させ、豊かな未来を創り出していきたいと願っています。なお、パビリオン建設にあたっては、住友グループが保有する森の木材を全面的に活用するなど、いろいろなアイデアや知恵を盛り込んで、今日の万博に相応しい姿をお見せしたいと思います。
「住友館」の出展に当たって、我々が大切にしたいのは、空間に包まれる、五感を研ぎ澄ます、仲間と共有する、といったここでの体験が、いつかどこかで、記憶の片鱗となって蘇ったとき、ほんの少しでも、笑顔になったり、背筋が伸びたり、優しくなれる、そんな原体験を、未来をつくる子どもたちと、すべての人に提供することです。 森の中は実際に目に見えている動植物たちだけでなく、さまざまないのちが宿っています。デジタルとアナログを駆使した「誰も知らない想像の森」を創り出し、インタラクティブな体験をしていただきます。未知の世界に足を踏み入れるとき、新しいものに出会うことは、ワクワクとした高揚感に包まれます。そのような体験を提供する「住友館」のパビリオンを通じて、未知のものとのつながりを自ら描く力、好奇心・想像力・空想力を呼び覚ますことで、すべての人が、同じように未来への期待感を抱いてくれることを願っています。
The Sumitomo Pavilion will feature the theme “Unknown Forest: Stories Waiting to be Discovered" and will create a place where everyone can gather and converse, recognizing the diversity of all life forms, including forests and nature, and solving social issues with a spirit of challenge and technology through inspiring entertainment.
Sumitomo has developed various businesses over its nearly 400-year history based on the business philosophy of “Benefit self and benefit others, private and public interests are one and the same." This philosophy means doing things that benefit oneself while also benefiting people, society, and the Earth. This principle, learned through Sumitomo's actions such as reforesting the devastated Besshi Copper Mine for 283 years through the Edo, Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods until the mine closed in 1973 over long-term deforestation and smoke damage, aligns with the modern concept of the SDGs. Considering the diverse life within forests connects to the Expo's theme, “Designing Future Society for Our Lives."
Osaka, Kansai is the place of origin of Sumitomo and participating in the Expo contributes to the further development of the Kansai region. Through this pavilion, Sumitomo aims to bring together the wisdom, technology, and people cultivated over its nearly 400-year history to create a prosperous future. In constructing the pavilion, Sumitomo plans to use wood from forests owned by the Sumitomo Group and incorporate various ideas and innovations to present a pavilion fitting for a modern-day Expo.
In the Sumitomo Pavilion, we want to provide the children and everyone who will create the future with the unique experience of being surrounded by space, having all five senses sharpened, and sharing the experience with others, so that someday, somewhere, when it comes back as a glimmer of memory, even if just a little, they will smile, hold their head up high, and be kind.
A forest not only includes the visible flora and fauna but also harbors various forms of life. We will create “Unknown Forest" using digital and analog techniques for an interactive experience. Stepping into an unknown world and encountering new things will bring a thrilling sense of excitement. Through those experiences in the Sumitomo Pavilion, we hope to awaken the ability to draw one's own connections with the unknown, and heighten curiosity, imagination, and fantasy, so that all people will have the same sense of anticipation for the future.

The Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan is an international event with participation from over 150 countries and regions worldwide. We hope you will visit the Sumitomo Pavilion, but also take the opportunity to experience various cultures from around the world by participating in the numerous events and visiting other pavilions at the Expo.
