堺市が推奨する「生きごみさん」は段ボール箱の中で土の中の微生物（好気性菌）等を活動させて生ゴミを分解する、環境に「やさしい生ゴミ減量・たい肥化の方法で、ガレージやベランダなどでも気軽にでき、においが少ないことが特徴です。それでは早速、「生きごみさん」の作り方と育て方についてみてみましょう！

Using “Mr. Compost" recommended by Sakai City is an eco-friendly way to reduce food waste and compost—that is, decompose food waste by making microorganisms (aerobic bacteria) in the soil active in a cardboard box. It is easy to make it in a garage or balcony, and it isn't as stinky as you might think. Let's take a look at how to compost with Mr. Compost!

③ ジャンプ　堆肥にする　堆肥のもとを使おう！
夏場は１ヶ月、冬場は２ヶ月育てた堆肥のもと・・・そのまま堆肥として使用できます。（生ごみがまだ分解されずに残っている場合は、形がわからなくなるまで寝かせる）
約５倍の*栄養のない土を足し、１〜２ヶ月寝かせます。
例：堆肥の元１kg＋栄養のない土５kg
→元肥
更に約５倍の*栄養のない土を足し、１〜２ヶ月寝かせます。
*植木鉢などに放っておいた栄養分のない土
→植え土


③ Go!
Use the compost.
It's easy!
In summer, making compost takes a month.
In winter, it takes two months.
From compost…
The compost can be used as-is. If some food waste items are not yet decomposed, leave it until it is.
Add compost to depleted soil* in a 1:5 ratio and leave it for one to two months.
Example: Add 1kg of compost to 5kg of depleted soil.
To fertilizer…
Add more compost to the depleted soil in a 1:5 ratio and leave it for another one to two months.
Example: Add the 6kg of compost/soil to 30kg of depleted soil

To potting soil.
*Leftover soil from used flowerpots.

寝かせ方について
❶ブルーシートなどに広げ、全体を湿らせる程度に水を加、かき混ぜます。
❷バケツや土のう袋などに入れ、風通しの良い日陰に置く。時々、全体を湿らせる程度に水をやり、混ぜます。

How to let the soil rest
① Spread the compost/soil mixture on a tarp, moisten with water, and mix thoroughly.
② Put the mixture in a bucket or sandbag and set it in a well-ventilated shady area. Add water and mix occasionally as needed.

生きごみさんの続け方
堆肥のもとを全て使わずに1/3〜半分を使って、減った分量の腐葉土と適量の米ぬかを足せば、いつまでも生きごみさんを続けることができます。その場合は①のステップ５の寝かせる工程は飛ばしても問題ありません。
対比として使用せず生ゴミを入れ続けた場合は、半年〜1年ほどで分解が進まなくなります。


How to keep Mr. Compost going
Use one-third to half of the compost, not all of it. Add mulch in the amount reduced and an appropriate amount of rice bran. By doing this, it is possible to continue to use the same Mr. Compost. In that case, you don't need to do the set-up steps 1 to 5. On the other hand, if you don't use the compost and just keep adding food waste, decomposition will cease in six months to a year.

How to use the compost

●追肥・・・生育期間中に与える肥料として利用できます。必ず植物の根から少し離して少量を使用してください。
植木鉢の隅に沿って置く
苗と苗の間に置く
●元肥・・・植え付け、植え替えをする前に土へ施しておく元肥として利用できます。
植え土・・・そのまま植え付け、植え替えようの土として利用できます。
土壌改良剤としても使用できるよ！土がふかふかに

Additional fertilization
Use it as fertilizer during the growing period. Use sparingly and not directly in contact with the plant roots.
Place it around the rim of the flowerpot.
Scatter it between seedlings.
Base fertilizer
Use as a primary fertilizer before planting or replanting.
Potting soil
Use as-is for planting and replanting.
Compost can be used as a soil booster. Soil will become soft and manageable.

The Activities of Mr. Compost

普段の生活で発生してしまう生ごみは、土の中の微生物の力を借りて分解し、肥料に変身させることができます。そんな環境にやさしい生ごみの減量とたい肥化を家庭で実践できる方法を、大阪府堺市役所　環境局環境事業部資源循環推進課に取材しました。

堺市では生活ごみに占める生ごみの割合は約４割もあり、30年以上前から生ごみ減量・たい肥化の取り組みを推進していました。平成２〜5年には生ごみ減量施策として、コンポスト容器の貸与事業を実施しましたが、対象者が畑・庭を所有している一部の方に限られ、公平性にかけることや害虫やにおいの問題が課題でした。そこで、ガレージやベランダなどでも気軽に実施でき、臭いが少ないことが特徴である生ごみ減量・たい肥化の方法であるダンボールコンポスト「生きごみさん」を推奨し始めました。「生きごみさん」という名前には、生ごみは生きていて自然に返せる物だということ、さらにはごみの減量化への取り組みへの意気込みを示すという意味が込められているそうです。実際に生きごみさんをご自宅で活用されている市民の方々からは、「準備物が簡単で始めやすかった。」や「出来上がったたい肥も家庭菜園やガーデニングで利用でき、植物の実りが良くなった。」等のご感想をいただいています。
堺市役所の資源循環推進課では、市内在住者を対象として生きごみさん講習会を市・区役所や堺都市緑化センターで定期的に実施しています。講習会では座学と実演があり、パンフレットだけではわからないコツなどを詳しく説明しています。また、生きごみさんをすぐに始められるスターターキットの配布も行っています。１０名以上の参加者がいる場合には出前講座を行うことも可能です。さらに堺市民でない方もYouTubeで実演部分の動画を確認できるようになっていたり、堺市に申し込むことで、より詳しい動画解説が行われているDVDを借りることができます。生きごみさんを始める際の準備物はダンボールや米ぬかなど、比較的簡単安価でそろえることが可能です。堺市ではこの簡単さを生かして普及率を上げていきたいと考えています。興味が湧いた方はぜひ下のQRコードから生きごみさんについて調べてみてください！



The food waste produced from daily life can be turned into compost with the help of microorganisms in the soil that cause it to decompose. We interviewed the Sakai City Hall, Resource Circulation Promoting Section, Environmental Department, Environmental Agency, Osaka, to find out the practical way to reduce food waste and make compost at home.
In Sakai City, food waste accounts for 40% of organic waste. Therefore, Sakai City has been promoting initiatives to reduce food waste and increase composting for more than 30 years. Sakai City started the project of lending composters as a garbage reduction policy in 1990-1993. However, there was a problem of inequity because the project was limited to people who owned fields or gardens. Harmful insects and unpleasant odors were also a problem. Hence, Sakai City began recommending cardboard box composting, Mr. Compost, which is a way to reduce food waste and produce compost. It can be easily stored in a garage or balcony and produces minimal odor. The name “Mr. Compost" is derived from the fact that the garbage can be taken back to nature, and to show enthusiasm for garbage reduction. Actually, the residents who use Mr. Compost comment, “It was easy to start because preparation wasn't hard," and “My plants grew well as the compost could be used for my private vegetable garden and gardening."
The Resource Circulation Promoting Section of Sakai City Hall conducts Mr. Compost lectures at city halls, ward offices, and the Sakai City Urban Greenery Center for residents of the city. In the classes, there is learning and demonstration, and an explanation of the tips which could not be found in the brochure in detail. In addition, they distribute Mr. Compost starter kits. Visiting lectures can be held if there are more than nine participants. Furthermore, even non-residents of Sakai City can watch the demonstration on YouTube or apply to Sakai City to borrow DVDs for a more detailed explanation. Preparations for starting Mr. Compost are relatively easy and cheap; only a cardboard box and rice bran are needed to get started.
